Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Leadership is a critical determinant of the success or failure of economic development initiatives at the local government level. In Kiyawa Local Government Area (LGA) of Jigawa State, the leadership style of local government officials plays a significant role in shaping the economic development strategies and outcomes of the region. Different leadership styles, such as transformational, transactional, and participative leadership, have varying effects on the way policies are formulated, resources are allocated, and development projects are implemented. Leaders who adopt inclusive and visionary leadership styles tend to create a more favorable environment for economic growth and social welfare (Alhassan & Mohammed, 2024).

In Kiyawa, leadership styles have influenced key areas such as infrastructure development, agricultural productivity, and poverty reduction programs. However, there is limited research on how specific leadership styles impact the local economy. This study seeks to evaluate the influence of leadership styles on economic development in Kiyawa, with a particular focus on how leadership decisions affect resource allocation, infrastructure, and local entrepreneurship.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The leadership style adopted by officials in Kiyawa Local Government Area has a profound impact on the region's economic development. However, there are concerns about whether the current leadership style is effective in addressing the economic challenges facing the community, including poverty, unemployment, and inadequate infrastructure. This study aims to assess the impact of different leadership styles on the economic development of Kiyawa and explore the factors that hinder effective leadership in driving local development.

The findings will contribute to understanding how leadership decisions impact the economic outcomes of Kiyawa and provide recommendations for improving leadership effectiveness in driving local development.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on the impact of leadership styles on economic development in Kiyawa Local Government Area, Jigawa State.
